To work as a freelance interpreter you should meet the following criteria:

  • excellent proficiency in your first language
  • very good English proficiency across a broad range of registers
  • excellent public speaking skills
  • tertiary education is preferable
  • post-graduate training in languages, translation and interpreting is preferable
  • at least 100 hours/20 days of simultaneous interpreting experience or
  • at least 100 hours/20 days of consecutive interpreting experience
  • accreditation with the SA Translators’ Institute is a recommendation
