To work as a freelance interpreter you should meet the following criteria:
- excellent proficiency in your first language
- very good English proficiency across a broad range of registers
- excellent public speaking skills
- tertiary education is preferable
- post-graduate training in languages, translation and interpreting is preferable
- at least 100 hours/20 days of simultaneous interpreting experience or
- at least 100 hours/20 days of consecutive interpreting experience
- accreditation with the SA Translators’ Institute is a recommendation
